View over the Black Precipice The Amphitheatre Trail starts on the Smith Summit Trail a little above Monte Rosa. While the trail does gain elevation over the length of it from here, it is mostly a trail the crosses the mountain as it comes back down almost as much as it goes up. The trail starts off by going into the trees on the right side of the Smith Summit Trail over exposed rock. It continues in the trees for just a bit before it comes out to an open rock face that includes the Black Precipice. The trail works up the left side of this open area zigzagging some until you are on top of it. You then head back into the trees where the trail stays mostly level with scrambles up some rocky sections mixed in.

Large rock the trail goes over After working up some small climbs in the trees, you come back to another open section of trail. Here you can follow the small yellow paint markers for the trail between a few short trees to a large rock you must cross over. You then go back into the trees briefly before coming to the White Arrow Trail. Here you can turn left and head to the summit or continue straight across it staying on the Amphitheatre Trail. The trail stays in the trees briefly before coming out to a nice opening and then turning right and heading down the mountain a little on a rocky section. It then turns left over some large rocks just before the Sidefoot Trail turns off to your right. From here you head slightly downhill over the mostly open rock area. After this you come to a short section in the trees before you reach the Smith Connecting Link where you can turn left and head up the mountain to the White Cross and White Dot Trails.

When descending... the trail is found on the Smith Connecting Link at a well marked intersection with a large wooden sign. The trail heads uphill from here coming out of the trees onto a mostly open rock surface. After crossing along the rocks, the Sidefoot Trail will head off to your left. Here the trail turns right and heads up a good incline over a rocky section before turning back left. Now you go back into the trees as you get to where the trail crosses the White Arrow Trail. Just after this you come back out of the trees over more large rocks as you continue uphill some. Soon you will get back into the trees as you start back downhill through a mostly level section with brief rocky descents. After a series of these you will come out to a large open area working your way down the edge of it near the Black Precipice. Here the trail heads back into the tree just before coming out to the Smith Summit Trail.
