Gilson Pond The Birchtoft Trail starts off at the Gilson Pond Trailhead located just up the Dublin Road from Poole Road and the main park headquarters. Starting by working part way around Gilson Pond, the trail is very flat to begin with. Once you turn left away from the pond at the Pond Loop Trail, the trail slowly starts to go uphill with nothing too steep or rocky early on though. As the trail continues on, it comes up along an old stone wall for a distance. It still continues up at a slight incline with a few short climbs in the trail sometimes followed by a quick descent.

Incline in the trail After going past the end of the Hinkley Trail it takes a right hand turn at what looks like an intersection but is not. This spot has an arrow on a tree to keep you headed in the right direction. As the trail starts to head uphill more, the inclines in the trail are getting a little steeper, a little longer, and sometimes a little rockier. After a while longer of continuing at a moderate grade up the mountain, the trail comes to a small downhill just it meets the Cascade Link.

When descending... the trail is found on the Cascade Link less than 50 feet below the intersection with the Red Spot Trail. The trail is easy to follow with good footing at is gradually works its way down the mountain with no steep spots. Nearly halfway down the trail, The Hinkley Trail heads off to the right back towards the park headquarters. Just before getting back to Gilson Pond, the trail meets up with the Pond Loop Trail and then heads around the pond to the right and eventually back to the parking lot at the trailhead.
