Ladder on the trail The Cliff Walk Trail starts off near the Western end of the Parker Trail that connects the Park Headquarters with the Toll Road Trailhead. The trail starts off pretty gentle and with only a few rocks in the trail. After a little while of easy hiking, the trail comes up to its first rocky climb. This climb is made a little easier with the addition of a ladder made from pieces of trees near the top of the climb. After the ladder climb, the trail turns back to the left and levels back out some more. It continues on this way for a good distance gaining a little bit of elevation while going over various amounts of rocks in the trail.

First view to the Southeast After a period of this gentle climbing, the trail goes downhill a bit into a small ravine. On the other side of this ravine though is longest period of steeper climbing on the trail. After this climb, the trail turns right and follows along the side of the ridge for a little bit before heading up through a small rock gully to the first of many view points along the trail. Just after this, the Hello Rock Trail comes in on your left. As you head further up the trail, it stays relatively flat or at a moderate incline. You encounter many small uphill sections between each easier section. There are some rocks in the trail, but not many large ones. After a little bit of this type of hiking, the Point Surprise Trail will come in from your left right at the opening and viewpoint known as Point Surprise.

An upper section of trail Now hiking up the trail goes along at a pretty good pace. The trail isn't very steep but is always gaining height. As you continue though the soft woods of the forest, you soon come to the Lost Farm Trail coming in from your right. There is a nice outlook to the South on the right about 10 feet down this trail. Continuing up the Cliff Walk Trail brings more of the same as far as terrain goes. Now you start to get into a section that has a few more scattered views off to the East from the ridge that you are on. There is also more sections with shorter trees where you are more in the open and walking over large rocky areas. Mixed in with the small uphill sections and flatter parts of the trail, the Thoreau, Do Drop, and Noble Trails will intersect with the Cliff Walk Trail and that order. Nearing the end of the trail, you will come onto a couple of longer and steeper climbs than you have had recently on the trail. The longest and steepest of these will come just before the end of the trail as you come up to Bald Rock and its open peak. Here the trail is joined by the Hedgehog Trail and turns into the Smith Connecting Link.

When descending... the trail starts at the bare peak of Bald Rock. It heads down into the trees to the South and over a couple of steeper descents. It follows the ridge line and gradually works it way down in elevation. With the many side trails that branch off, you have plenty of options to go back to the Old Toll Road trailhead (on the right) or to the main Park Headquarters Trailhead (to the left). Once you have gotten past all of the side trails, the trail goes downhill quicker with a couple of main descents including one that starts with a wooden ladder made from tree parts. This ladder can be just a bit awkward the first time down as there is nothing to balance yourself with. After a short bit of easier hiking, you will soon come to the Parker Trail where you can again choose which trailhead you need to head back to.
