Early ascent on the trail The Old Halfway House Trail starts off the Old Toll Road Trailhead just beyond the gate on the road. Just feet beyond the gate is a wooden sign on the left marking the start of the trail. It starts off following a stone wall while running parallel to the Old Toll Road. Progressively the trail works its way to the left away from the toll road as it steadily gains elevation. Soon you get to the first moderate climb on the trail. After this climb, the trail levels back out quite a bit while staying smooth and easy. The trail continues along like this for a ways before it actually starts to gradually go back downhill.

Upper section of trail Soon the trail starts to head back uphill while still remaining quite easy. The trail heads uphill a little steeper than it did in the early sections and also starts to have some more rocks mixed in on the trail surface. Through here the trail follows along the side of the mountain as it goes up. As you keep going up the trail, it gets just a little steeper for a while before heading into a section of somewhat dense softwood trees. The section is the hardest part of the trail, but still isn't too bad. After this spot, the trees open back up and the trail levels back out some before coming to the intersection with the Cart Path crossing from your right. Now the trail heads back uphill while going through a trough that has been worn into the ground between many bushes. Coming out of the trough you have on last ascent before you come to the White Arrow Trail just above the start of it where you can turn left and continue up the mountain.

When descending... the trail is found on the White Arrow Trail at an intersection marked with a wooden sign just before the Old Toll Road. The trail turns down to the right going down a climb and then through a trough worn into the ground. You then pass through a stone wall where the Cart Path crosses from your left to your right. From here the trail goes downhill at a moderate descent over some terrain that is a little bit rocky. The trail gets a little less steep while continuing down after this. After a gradual decline, the trail actually heads back uphill some at a very moderate and easy grade. The trail then levels back off some before making another descent which turns you to the left some and brings you back close to the Old Toll Road. Through the last section you can see the Old Toll Road to your left as you work your way down the easy and gradual descent of the rest of the trail until you come out at the trailhead.
