State park boundary on the trail The Royce Trail starts where the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail crosses NH Rt. 124 about 1/2 mile West of the Halfway House trailhead. The trail starts at this small pull off where parking is not allowed by crossing the stone wall on the edge of the trees. Starting very gently, the trail is smooth and gradually gains elevation in the early section. You travel though mixed forests and a couple rock beds before coming to another stone wall with a sign letting you know you are now entering the Monadnock State Park. Here the trail gets a little rockier in places, but still remains easy after crossing a brook. Not too much further up the trail, the grade does steepen some as you continue up the mountain. The trail still remains quite easy with a few rocky sections.

Wet upper section of trail Now more than halfway up, the trail continues up at a moderate incline gain a few more rocks on its surface. The trail remains mostly straight with a few bends mixed in. After steadily gaining more elevation, the trail levels back out some shortly before coming to the intersection with the Cart Path at a stone wall. Now the trail goes through a sometimes wet section while still being mostly flat. Soon it starts the head uphill more steeply also with more rocks. The trail works its way up the remaining section by going back and forth along the slope some making it so it isn't as steep as it could be. Soon you will come to the White Arrow Trail at the same place that the Monte Rosa Trail breaks off from it.

When descending... the trail is found on the White Arrow Trail at the intersection where the Monte Rosa Trail joins back to it. The Royce Trail is marked by a small wooden sign that says "Royce Tr" and "Metacomet-Monadnock" in smaller letters under it. The trail starts off by going down a moderate decline with some rocks in it. Soon the trail levels out some before coming to the intersection where it crosses the Cart Path. Then the trail continues down the mountain at an easy descent with few rocks mixed in. The trail maintains a pretty constant grade for the majority of the remaining length and has some short sections of rocky areas. The trail crosses through a few small stone walls and over a couple small brooks before leaving the park boundaries. Shortly after this you will come to another stone wall just as you get to the road (NH Rt 124). While there is a pull off here, there is not parking so you should plan on parking at the Halfway House Trailhead and walking back to your car there.
