Fairly smooth while in the dense trees The Smith Bypass Trail is the shortest trail on the mountain. It is one tenth of a mile and gains less than 100 feet in elevation. The trail is a bypass that goes around the Monte Rosa eliminating an extra climb and decent.

Rocky section near the top The trail starts on the Monte Rosa Trail less than 50 feet up the trail from the junction with the upper end of the Fairy Spring Trail. The Smith Bypass Trail is on the right hand side of the Monte Rosa Trail and its start is marked by a yellow dash painted on a rock. The trail starts off with a steady climb with scattered rocks in the trail. After a short distance, the trail goes into some thick trees and the rocks turn to small roots in the trail. Shortly after this, the trail starts to climb a little bit steeper and gains more large rocks. After this scramble, the trail becomes only large rocks and you are stepping from rock to rock. Just before the end of the trail you start to go over a smooth rock surface can come up to a large pointed boulder on your left. This is the upper end of the trail where it joins back up with the Smith Summit Trail. From here you can look back and see Monte Rosa and what you just bypassed.

When descending... there are painted markings on the rock at the start of the trail. To go down the Smith Bypass Trail, you will want to follow the yellow arrow pointing "TO RT. 124." The trail will start off with going over large rocks where care should be taken with your footing. It will continue gradually downhill and quickly come out to the Monte Rosa Trail just about it's junction with the Fairy Spring Trail.
