Small incline in the trail The Smith Connecting Link starts off at the end of the Cliff Walk Trail on Bald Rock. The trail heads down over the peak in the direction of the summit. After going down over the open rock, the trail heads into the trees. The trail now heads uphill over a mostly open rock surface. In the early sections there are a couple small scrambles over rocks and a couple rocky sections, but nothing too hard. The trail heads mostly through dense short trees on both sides to start making it very easy to follow the trail. Soon you will come to the intersection with the Eastern end of the Amphitheatre Trail on your left. Continue to the right where the trees will open back up some as you continue over a rock trail surface.

Open rocky section of trail The trail continues to steadily gain elevation with a mix of gentle inclines and steeper rocky sections. The trail continues to be easy to follow as the path is well worn and the trees are still quite dense in places next to the trail. Moving further up the trail, the mix of gentle inclines and steeper rocky sections has more of the second. The steeper sections come more frequently while getting a little bit longer as well. Soon you will come out of the trees into the open and will have a view up to the summit on your left. The trail winds back and forth a little over the open rock following a series of yellow painted "S"s. At the end of this open area you will pass through some small bushes to end up at the White Cross Trail.

When descending... the trail can be accessed off of the White Cross Trail just a little below the split from the White Dot Trail. The Smith Connecting Link is only marked by a yellow painted arrow and a path through the bushes. The trail starts off over an open rocky area for a little bit before heading down into the trees. The trail starts off with steeper rocky declines and gentle descents. The trail is mostly open rock surface and is easy to follow. After a series of descents the trail will start to level out a little and maintaining a steadily decline. The Amphitheatre Trail will soon branch off to your right as you keep going down the trail. After heading downhill for a while more, you will come out of the trees and onto open rock as you head up to the sub peak of Bald Rock and the end of the trail. Here you can continue down on either the Cliff Walk or Hedgehog Trails.
